your voice heard!

Are you a teenager or young adult, age 14-24, who’s been affected by the foster care system in Rhode Island? Do you want to work with other young people to make things better for youth in the system?

Youth Leadership Training & Empowerment Board

The Voice Youth Leadership Training & Empowerment Board is a motivated group of teenagers and young adults working together for positive change in the foster care system. It was formed through collaborative efforts between Foster Forward (formerly the Rhode Island Foster Parents Association) and the Rhode Island Council of Resource Providers (RICORP).

Run by and for young people, The Voice identifies important issues impacting youth in foster care and works to raise awareness about them. For example, when the state wanted to reduce funding to the public transit authority and cut back on bus schedules, we wrote and delivered testimony at the budget cut hearings at the Statehouse. We’ve presented at national conferences, participated in events at the U.S. Capitol—even shared our voice with the national media!

If you want to advocate for and promote success among fellow young people, educate the community about issues important to you, and strengthen your leadership skills—all while getting to know a great group of people—then join The Voice. We’d love to hear what you have to say.

Here are some of the exciting events in which members of The Voice have recently been involved:

  • Helped draft a New England wide version and signing of the Sibling Bill of Rights in RI.
  • 2012 Child Welfare League of America national conference in Washington, D.C.
  • Foster Youth Shadow Day at the U.S. Capitol
  • The Governor’s Council on Youth Transitioning to Adulthood
  • Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative: Youth Leadership Institute
  • Dare to Dream Student Leadership Conference
  • Hiring/Search Committee for the director of DCYF
  • Interviewed on National Public Radio and Youth Champions of Southern New England radio show
